"Tell me where your mouth goes before fear starts giving orders."

Tamsin said it on the rug in front of the dead hearth, already pulling Lina down with hands that shook from cold and choice. The common room had been cleared. Chairs pushed back. Doors barred. Old Pero stood in the kitchen with his back turned and a ladle in one hand like a weapon. Isolde's bells sounded faintly from the cellar line. Maera's voice moved under them, low and sharp, keeping the cracked bottle from drinking the house.

Lina knelt between Tamsin's thighs and forced herself to answer like a lover, not a panicked steward. "Mouth on your mouth first. Then throat and then breasts if you say yes. Hand between your legs over cloth first. No brew, no bottle, and no saving by force."

Tamsin's face softened despite the cold. "Good. I want your mouth. I want heat because I choose it, not because the hearth is hungry."

"I choose too."

They kissed.

At first, Lina felt only cold lips and urgency. Then Tamsin's mouth opened and warmth returned as a small human fact: breath, tongue, teeth, the wet sound of wanting in a room trying not to become a ritual. Lina cupped Tamsin's face. Tamsin's hands gripped Lina's waist.

"Arousal," Lina said against her mouth. "Strong. Fear with it. Still mine."

"Same. Clit, breasts, anger, cold toes. Continue."

Lina moved to Tamsin's throat, kissing skin that tasted of salt and smoke. Tamsin arched, not theatrically, simply seeking warmth. The hearth gave one faint tick.

"It heard," Lina said.

"Then make it wait its turn."

That steadied Lina more than any bell. She pulled Tamsin's shift open at the chest. "Breasts?"

"Yes. Mouth. Hands above waist until I say."

Lina took one nipple into her mouth and sucked. Tamsin gasped, fingers in Lina's hair, then loosened deliberately. The hearth ticked again. A thin orange line appeared under one coal.

Below, the bottle wailed.

Tamsin's thighs closed around Lina's hip. "Still us?"

Lina lifted her head. "Still us. Where are you?"

"Common room. Rug. Dead hearth. Lina. No brew. I am freezing and wet and angry that danger has such timing."

Lina laughed breathlessly. "Good."

"Hand now. Over cloth."

Lina slid her hand between Tamsin's legs over the shift. Tamsin was hot there despite the room, dampness spreading through linen. Lina pressed with the heel of her hand. Tamsin moaned, and the hearth's orange line widened.

Old Pero shouted from the kitchen, "That sounded useful."

Tamsin shouted back, "Turn around and die."

"Back remains turned."

Lina laughed into Tamsin's breast. The laugh fed the room differently from arousal. The hearth popped once, a real fire sound.

"Skin," Tamsin said. "I want your fingers on my clit. No inside yet."

Lina pushed the shift up. Tamsin's cunt gleamed in the weak firelight, wet and flushed, her legs open because she chose open and not because any bottle had reached them. Lina touched her clit with two fingers. Tamsin's whole body shuddered.

"Good girl," Lina almost said, then stopped. That word was not for crisis unless Tamsin asked.

Tamsin opened one eye. "I heard you stop."

"Not spending what is yours."

"Say warm instead."

"Warm," Lina said, rubbing slow circles. "You are warm. You are here. You are choosing. Your body is yours and it is making heat because you want my hand."

Tamsin's breath broke. "Inside. Two fingers. Present yes."

Lina slid two fingers into her, careful and sure. Tamsin was slick, tight, alive around her. The hearth flared high enough to light the room orange. Lina kept her thumb on Tamsin's clit and fucked her with steady strokes, not rushing when the cellar noise rose, not stopping when fear tried to turn pleasure into duty.

"I want to come," Tamsin said. "For me. For us. Hearth can listen like everyone else and learn manners."

"For you," Lina said.

Tamsin came with a hard cry, hips lifting, cunt clenching around Lina's fingers. The hearth roared up, flame catching the banked wood. Heat rolled across Lina's back. From below came a crack like glass breaking under a boot.

Isolde rang the bell once.

Maera shouted, "Keep going if chosen. It is not done."

Tamsin grabbed Lina's wrist before Lina could turn toward the cellar. "Your turn. Chosen?"

Lina was shaking. "Chosen. I want your hand. Fast. I am too close to fear."

Tamsin pushed Lina onto her back and shoved Lina's skirt up. She did not bother with elegance. She put her hand between Lina's legs, found her wet, and stopped.

"Say it."

"Common room. Fire back. You. No brew. I want your fingers on my clit. No inside. I want to come because I am alive and furious."

"Then come here."

Tamsin rubbed her hard and direct. Lina came embarrassingly fast, back arching, one hand reaching toward the warm hearthstone but not touching it. Pleasure tore through fear and left breath behind. Tamsin kissed her through it, swallowing the sound before it could become panic.

The hearth flared white-gold.

Then settled.

Silence came from the cellar.

For three breaths nobody moved.

Lina wanted to run below immediately. Tamsin caught her by the waist, not hard enough to trap, only enough to ask the body before the mind bolted.

"End first," Tamsin said.

"They may need us."

"They need you not to carry open heat into a cellar full of bad hunger."

That was true and infuriating. Lina stayed. They breathed. In for three. Out for six. Not as tidy as Isolde would have liked, but real enough that Lina's hands stopped reaching for emergencies.

Old Pero said from the kitchen, voice rough, "Bread approves."

Lina laughed and cried at once.

They rang down the breath in front of the fire. Salt palms. Bread brought by a red-faced Old Pero who looked at the ceiling with heroic focus. Water. Names. Endings. The hearth stayed warm but not hungry.

Maera came up from the cellar carrying the cracked bottle sealed in a lump of hardened gray salt. "The scrape failed to enter. The hearth answered chosen warmth and rejected loose hunger."

Isolde looked exhausted. Vex held Pella upright. Nara held Pella's elbow. Thessia, soot on one cheek, wrote even while standing.

Garron came last, carrying the iron tongs with a green stain burned into the tips. He looked at the hearth, then at Lina. "The iron held long enough. It will need reforging."

"Bill me," Lina said.

"I intended to. Heroism is not a discount category."

Old Pero muttered, "Finally, forge theology."

Garron gave him a grave nod. "Bread has standards. So does iron."

Lina noticed the way the hearth flame leaned toward Garron for one second, as if recognizing a cousin. She was too tired to understand it, which meant she wrote it down before fatigue could pretend the detail was decorative.

Tamsin pulled the blanket around herself and Lina. "Put in the law: the hearth is not available for emergency seduction unless the people involved want each other."

Thessia looked at her. "I will phrase that differently."

"Coward."

Lina leaned against Tamsin, watching the fire. The Moonlit Chalice had survived another door. Not closed. Never fully closed. But marked, warmed, and held by hands that had learned to stop.

That night, after everyone ate, Lina wrote the Act VI margin:

Mire Batch taught Valmora that sensation can be stolen, returned, taxed, refused, healed, and weaponized. The hearth taught us that chosen heat is not the same as hunger.

She underlined chosen.

The fire stayed steady.

Much later, when the common room had emptied and the gray salt lump sat locked away from the hearth, Lina and Tamsin returned to the rug fully dressed. They did not touch sexually. They sat shoulder to shoulder and ate the bread Old Pero had saved.

"Do you feel used?" Lina asked.

Tamsin chewed, swallowed, and took the question seriously. "By you? No. By circumstance? Rudely. By the hearth? Perhaps, but it listened when told manners, so I am withholding judgment."

"I hate that the difference matters."

"That is why we keep writing differences down."

Lina looked at the hearthstone where her hand had almost gone during orgasm. "I wanted to touch it when I came."

"I saw."

"I did not."

"I saw that too."

"If I had?"

Tamsin took time. "Then we would write a different rule after finding out whether it touched back. I am glad we do not need that rule tonight."

Lina nodded with the wary economy of a woman counting costs. Her body still felt loose from pleasure and tight from responsibility, a combination she was beginning to recognize as the cost of being the person who made doors. "Chosen heat stabilized the hearth better than loose hunger."

"And chosen stopping stabilized us better than heroics."

Lina wrote both on the margin page. Then she added a third line:

Do not let future versions of this story pretend the sex alone saved the house. Terms saved the sex, and the sex carried warmth.

Tamsin read it over her shoulder. "Good. That one can survive a foolish bard."

"Orin will resent that."

"Orin can improve under pressure like everyone else."

The hearth popped once, warm and ordinary.

Tamsin pointed at it. "No comments from furniture."

It made no further sound.
