"No one drinks anything today, even if the bottle starts reciting compliments in a voice you find personally healing."
Tamsin said it in Garron's forge while Lina stood before the sealed bellows, wearing her work apron, sleeves tied back, hair braided, and red ribbon around one wrist. The forge had been stripped of loose tools. Windows open. Buckets ready. Cooling cloths ready. Bread on the sill because Old Pero had threatened to nail it there if ignored.
The forge made everyone look more honest than the inn did. Fire put sweat on upper lips and made fine coats look foolish. Vex had removed her velvet jacket and stood in a plain dark bodice, all her elegance reduced to posture and eyes. Thessia had ink already on one finger. Isolde's sleeves were pinned above her wrists, showing the old cooling scars near her palms. Orin had been placed on a stool far from every vessel and looked like a man enduring exile with scholarly courage.
Lina could feel Tamsin behind her before Tamsin touched anything. That was the comfort and the danger. Her body wanted the familiar hand at the small of her back, wanted permission to become brave through touch, and today bravery had to stand without being stroked into place.
"You are not behind me by accident," Lina said.
"No. If you sway, I catch. If you reach, I stop. If you start smiling like you have solved the world, I become irritating."
"You are already irritating."
"Then I am warmed up."
The witness card from room seven hung above the workbench.
Maker: Lina.
Primary witness: Tamsin.
Forge witness: Garron.
Cooling witness: Isolde.
Worker witness: Vex.
Contract witness: Thessia.
Translator under supervision: Orin.
Closer: named before any opening.
Public face: warning, not method.
No single hand owns the whole.
Lina read it aloud before touching the first vessel. "Accepted."
Garron checked the sealed bellows. "No Stone in the room. No bluevein filings loose. Returned bead boxed. Black-blue silk boxed and outside the forge wall. Mountain contact only through the already recorded bellows condensate residue in the sealed hinge."
Vex said, "No serving, no smelling from open cup, and no tasting."
Isolde lifted her bell. "If speech fails, I ring and cool. If pride rises, I ring and cool. If anyone calls suffering beautiful, I ring and cool."
Orin raised a hand. "If a phrase is accurate but unfortunately beautiful?"
"You cool yourself," Tamsin said.
Thessia placed a blank notice on the bench. "Public face waits for outcome. If this bottle becomes dangerous closed, the notice says dangerous closed."
Lina made herself breathe before she made herself clever. "Starting."
Threshold Batch One was not a drink yet. That was the first rule. It was a sealed convergence study: one breath of Green in vapor, one drop of Salt memory distillate, one cooled thread of Mire suspension, one external mountain response caught from the bellows hinge, and Hearthwater as carrier. The goal was not service. The goal was to see whether the directions could share a sealed vessel without teaching the vessel to command.
She said each piece aloud before using it, not because the room needed the lesson, but because her own hands needed to remember they were being watched.
"Green is attention to skin and movement. Salt is memory and rhythm. Mire is sensation returned or stolen. Mountain is stability and pressure. Hearthwater is return, food, common speech, and the right to stop."
Orin looked pained with pleasure. "That is almost a prayer."
"It is a work order," Garron said.
"The best prayers are," Isolde murmured.
The first step smelled like crushed leaf and wet wood. Lina poured Green vapor through a glass coil into the receiver. Her skin prickled. She wanted to move. Tamsin saw her left hand flex.
"Name."
"Lina. Forge. Green vapor. Movement impulse mild. No command."
Salt followed, a single drop. Lina's throat tightened with memory so quickly it felt unfair. Her mother, Tamsin's hand, Daren saying the wall argued, Seraphine's wrist. All of them arrived as if the drop had opened a drawer.
"Name."
"Shore memory. Tears possible. Speech present. Continuing."
Mire cooled the receiver. The glass fogged. Lina's lips tingled. Thought slowed at the edges, but Tamsin made her describe the spoon on the bench before allowing the next step.
"Bent handle. Soup scratches. Ugly. Loyal."
Old Pero shouted from outside, "Spoons hear praise."
"Not now," everyone said.
Then came the mountain step. Garron unlocked the outer hinge of the sealed bellows while Tamsin held the witness pin and Vex watched Lina's hands. No bluevein entered the vessel. Instead, the receiver sat near the hinge while the bellows exhaled one controlled breath through iron, not air. The glass vibrated.
Lina's spine straightened. Pride arrived hot and clean.
"Name," Tamsin said sharply.
"Mountain response. Desire to hold steady. Desire to prove control. Arousal moderate from pressure and being watched. No kneeling. No opening."
Garron closed the hinge.
Tamsin stepped in front of Lina for three breaths, blocking the receiver from sight with her own body. "Look at me."
Lina looked. Tamsin's cheeks were flushed from forge heat, a damp curl stuck to her temple, and her mouth was firm with worry she refused to soften into fear. Lina wanted to kiss her so badly that the want itself became another report.
"Desire to kiss stopper instead of touching vessel," Lina said.
"Denied until after sealing."
"Cruel."
"Useful."
Vex said, "Good denial. The body learned that desire can be redirected without being humiliated."
"Do you put everything in professional language?" Tamsin asked.
"Only when the room is full of people who might otherwise pretend they are not aroused."
That made Orin press the cold cloth harder to his face. Thessia did not look up from the ledger, but her ears reddened.
Hearthwater went last. Ordinary warmth. Salt, herb, inn ash in the cork. Lina poured it through the central funnel while Tamsin's hand hovered near her elbow but did not touch.
The liquid inside the receiver turned clear.
That was worse than color.
Orin whispered, "It looks empty."
"Danger loves looking simple," Vex said.
The receiver sealed itself before Lina touched the stopper. The glass mouth narrowed with a soft sound like cooling sugar. Inside, the liquid held no bubble, no thread, no swirl. Only clarity and a warmth that made every person in the forge lean forward by one involuntary degree.
Tamsin slapped the bench. "Back."
Everyone stepped back.
"Report," Vex said.
Lina swallowed before the room could hear too much of her pulse. "Arousal is strong. Not genital first. Whole body attention. Desire to hold the bottle. Desire to be the person who understands it. Fear is strong. Speech present."
The reports went around the room, because silence would have given the bottle too much privacy.
Vex said, "Nipples hard, breathing shallow, service impulse absent. I do not want to use it on workers. I want to see whether it can make a liar tell the truth. That desire is mine and unsafe."
Thessia wrote, then said, "I want to price the danger. That is a bad sign in me. No sale language on the page."
Orin lifted one hand. "I want to describe it beautifully enough that someone forgives the risk. I request continued supervision and possibly bread."
Old Pero shoved bread through the window without entering. "Possibly nothing. Eat."
Isolde broke the loaf and gave pieces out with the solemnity of a rite. "Mouth, bread, chew, swallow. We return through ordinary work."
Lina chewed because everyone watched her chew. The bread was coarse, salty, too dry at the edge, and so human that the receiver's clean beauty lost a fraction of its hold.
Garron said, "Desire to build better locks."
Isolde said, "Bell warm. No kneeling pull. Listening pull."
Tamsin said, "Possessive impulse strong. I want the bottle away from Lina and also want to know whether it likes me. I hate both."
"Useful," Vex said.
The bottle knocked once against the receiver stand.
Not loud.
Enough.
Thessia wrote: sealed bottle responsive.
Lina did not move. That was the hardest thing she had done all day.
"Public face," Tamsin said.
Lina forced herself to look away from the bottle and at the blank notice. "Threshold Batch One exists. It is sealed. It is not served. It is not safe closed. It increases attention through proximity. It provokes possessive curiosity. No one opens it."
Thessia wrote.
Orin, voice strained, added, "It may make the self feel like a witness to itself."
Tamsin glared.
"I know. Cooling myself." He pressed a cold cloth to his own face.
Garron brought the iron cradle. The bottle slid into it without being touched. Three locks closed: forge, temple, household. Tamsin tied red thread around the cradle and sealed it with plain wax.
"No royal wax," she said.
"No pretty wax," Old Pero called.
The forge relaxed by inches.
Lina did not. She could still feel the bottle like a second pulse in the room.
"I want to write alone," she said.
Tamsin's face tightened.
Lina corrected before hurt could bloom. "I want to write the impulse to write alone into shared record."
Tamsin breathed out. "Good save."
They wrote together:
The bottle is dangerous because it makes understanding feel intimate and ownership feel responsible.
When the final word dried, the cradle cooled.
From the yard, Caldus Vey said, "Her Majesty requests to see what you have made."
Garron picked up the hammer.
Tamsin said, "Of course she does."
