Chapter 170: The Public Tasting Trial

"The first person who whistles at a volunteer loses the right to watch and gains the privilege of carrying water buckets under Old Pero's direct emotional guidance."
Tamsin said it from the center of the market square at noon, and because Old Pero stood beside the buckets with both sleeves rolled up, the warning worked. The square was packed but ordered. Thessia had chalked witness lines on the stone. Garron guarded the evidence table where false bottles sat sealed under mesh. Isolde's temple station stood under the blue awning. Vex had built a curtained trial screen from Rose privacy panels and inn sheets, high enough to hide bodies from the crowd, low enough at the bottom to show feet and prevent accusations of trickery.
Lina stood at the brewing table with her ingredients laid plain: warm inn water in a covered jug, clean ash filter, common salt, public-strength emberleaf, honey, bread, and cups marked with ordinary ink. No hidden vial, no Stone, no directional distillate, and no royal substitution.
Perric stood outside the witness line in his cream coat. Caldus stood farther back, taking notes. Seraphine was absent, of course, and the queen's absence sat above the square like a roof nobody could see.
Tamsin pointed to the screen. "Volunteers are adults and named by choice. They may stop at any time. They may continue privately after the trial if they still want each other after food, cooling, and a walk home. The trial proves whether Hearthwater supports speech, arousal, and refusal. It does not prove anyone owes the square a climax."
Pellia, the glove mender, called from her chair near the front, "I might give myself one anyway if the square behaves."
The square laughed. Tamsin looked at her. "Your hands, your timing, your report."
"That is why I like you."
Sella and her husband, Corven the mason, entered the screen with Vex. They had both stated age, consent, relationship, and stop signal before the crowd arrived. Sella was thirty-eight, Corven was forty-one, and they had been married twelve years. No false brew had been taken. Desire: speak without shame, touch without rushing, prove stopping. Refusal: no public exposure of breasts, cunt, or cock; no penetration during trial; no continuing if either felt watched instead of witnessed. Stop signal: "lamp out."
Lina brewed while everyone watched. Water through ash. Salt. Emberleaf. Honey after each volunteer ate bread. Stir clockwise because her mother had done it that way, not because magic required it. She said that aloud. People smiled. Ordinary things needed defenders today.
Pellia drank first, seated in full view with Isolde beside her. She wore a dark dress, gray hair braided, hands bare on her knees. "Pellia, fifty-six. Widowed. No partner present. I want to know whether this cup makes me feel foolish for wanting alone. Refusal: nobody speaks to me while I test unless I ask. Stop signal: I put the cup upside down."
She drank. The square held its breath.
Pellia closed her eyes. A flush rose from her throat to her cheeks. Her fingers flexed on her knees, then slid over the fabric of her skirt, not under it. She smiled slowly.
"Report," Isolde said.
"Warm and mild," Pellia said. "Breasts sensitive, and between my legs waking rather than shouting. Memory of my late husband is present but not grabbing me by the throat. I want to touch myself later with the good oil and no audience. I do not want to do it now because this chair is hard and half of you are nosy."
The square laughed, softer this time.
Vex called from the screen entrance, "Can you refuse?"
Pellia lifted her cup upside down. "Already did."
The first proof was not dramatic. That made it strong.
Sella and Corven drank next behind the screen. The crowd could see their shoes, shadows, and Vex's silhouette. Lina stood at the table close enough to hear every word and far enough not to make the trial about her.
Sella spoke first. "Warm in my chest. Nipples hard. Embarrassed saying that with my husband three feet away and Valmora pretending not to listen."
Corven's voice followed, rough. "Aroused. Want to touch her. Also afraid of doing it wrong with everyone knowing."
Sella said, "Good. Be afraid enough to listen."
Vex said, "State the first touch before either of you makes it pretty."
Sella took a breath. "Corven may kiss my mouth. Hands at my waist over dress. No breasts yet."
Corven answered, "Those terms stand."
The kiss was hidden by the screen, but the sound was not: a soft press, a breath caught, Sella's small laugh when Corven stopped too quickly.
"I said no breasts yet, not kiss me like a tax stamp," she said.
The square laughed again, and Corven groaned. "I am trying to be respectful."
"Respect can use a little tongue."
Tamsin's mouth twitched. "Useful public education."
The second kiss lasted longer. Sella's shadow leaned into him. Corven's hands stayed at her waist. Lina could see his fingers spread over the fabric, holding, not grabbing. Sella moaned once, low and real. The square went silent in a different way.
"Report," Vex said.
Sella's voice had thickened. "Wet, with arousal strong enough to name. I want his hand on my breast over dress, still with no skin."
Corven said, "I want that too."
"Ask properly."
"Sella, may I touch your breast over your dress?"
"Yes. One hand. Slow."
His shadow moved. Sella inhaled sharply. Her feet shifted apart behind the bottom gap in the screen. Lina's own body answered because the scene was chosen, clear, and hot. She felt her nipples tighten under her bodice and named it quietly for Tamsin.
"Arousal from consensual trial. Not false heat. Standing at maker station."
Tamsin touched two fingers to Lina's wrist, then withdrew. "Good."
Sella's voice came again. "More pressure, not pinching. There. Yes. Stop."
Corven's hand shadow stopped immediately.
The square saw it. Everyone saw it.
Sella laughed, breathless. "That may be the sexiest thing you have done in a year."
Corven sounded wrecked. "Stopping?"
"Stopping when I said stop."
Vex let the silence hold after that.
Perric's face had gone still.
Sella continued, "I choose to continue. Same hand. You may kiss my neck. No marks."
Corven repeated every term. The screen showed his head bend. Sella's moan was louder this time. She did not hide it. Her hand gripped his shoulder. Her hips rocked once, then she said, "Pause."
He paused.
She breathed. "Still me and still yes. I want my own hand under my skirt. Corven keeps his hand at my waist, and no one else comments."
Vex looked toward Tamsin, who looked at Isolde, who nodded. Terms allowed solo touch. The screen protected sight. The crowd had been warned.
"Accepted," Vex said.
The square heard fabric shift. Sella's feet planted wider. Her breath changed as her own fingers found herself under the skirt. Corven made a sound like prayer and bit it off.
Sella laughed through a moan. "You may say I am beautiful. You may not ask to help."
"You are beautiful," he said. "I am not helping unless you ask tomorrow, today, later, whenever you want, gods, I am talking too much."
"You are. It is sweet. Quiet now."
He went quiet.
Sella touched herself behind the screen while the entire market listened to refusal remain alive inside desire. It was indecent, controlled, and impossible to mistake for false heat. Her moans rose, stopped when she paused, rose again when she chose. Lina watched the crowd watching the rules instead of only the pleasure. That was the trial. Not whether Sella could come. Whether she could stop on the way and still want.
"Lamp out," Sella said suddenly.
Everything stopped. Corven stepped back so fast his heel scraped stone.
Vex's voice: "Stop honored. Report when ready."
Sella breathed hard. One breath. Two. Three.
"Cramp," she said. "Not fear. I want water."
Isolde carried water inside. No one spoke. Sella drank, then laughed. "I also want to finish later in a bed without half the town learning my rhythm."
Corven said, "Yes. Later. Food first."
Pellia applauded once, firm as a judge. The square followed, not whistling, not roaring, but clapping like people understood they had seen work.
Perric stepped forward. "A charming demonstration. Mild, as promised. It does not address those whose need is stronger."
Jessa's voice cut across the square. "My need was stronger yesterday. Your label put me on wet stones."
Perric turned. "I did not sell you that bottle."
"Your words did. Your argument did. Your useful pressure did."
The crowd turned with her.
Thessia lifted Halven's note in evidence cloth. "Public record: Trial demand rises. Vane assures civic pressure will break Beren's refusal if safe version appears withheld. Use courage labels. Avoid direct crown. Recover forge condition if possible. Palace shadow sufficient."
Perric's face changed for the first time.
Caldus looked sharply at the note.
Lina stepped to the front of the brewing table. "Hearthwater is mild because mild can come home. False heat climbs and calls climbing proof. Threshold stays sealed because stronger is not safer just because wanting is loud."
Tamsin added, "And because stopping must remain sexier than pressure."
Pellia raised her empty cup. "Put that on a sign."
The crowd laughed, but the laugh belonged to Lina this time.
Perric stepped back from the witness line.
Not defeated, not yet, but alone enough for people to see the space around him.
