"I am not here because your stopping fixed everything. I am here because it gave me a room to stand in."

Tamsin said it from the doorway of Lina's bedroom after midnight, carrying a candle, a folded blanket, and the same expression she used when entering a room that might contain broken glass. Lina sat on the bed in a clean shift, hair loose, hands visible on the quilt because Vex had told her not to make Tamsin ask for proof of emptiness.

No brew, no cure-net, no blue clay, no notes, and no bells except the temple bell on the windowsill. The shared record lay downstairs with Isolde. The bedroom smelled of lye soap, old wood, candle wax, and the faint lavender Tamsin used on linens when she was too angry to sleep.

Lina stood, then stopped when Tamsin's eyes narrowed.

"Ask before crossing."

"May I come to you?"

"No. I come in first."

Tamsin entered and set the blanket on the chair. She was still in her dark work dress, sleeves rolled, throat bare. There were shadows under her eyes. Lina wanted to kiss them, apologize into them, erase them, all of which were selfish tasks disguised as tenderness.

"Give me the report in plain words," Tamsin said.

"Fear is strong, and love is strong. Arousal mild because you are here and because I have missed your voice. Shame is present. Desire to be forgiven through touch. Not permission."

Tamsin's mouth trembled once. "Good. My report: anger strong. Love is strong. Arousal present because my body is irritatingly loyal and because you stopped alone. Trust damaged. Desire to touch you. Desire to make you wait. Both true."

Lina nodded with the wary economy of a woman counting costs. "Terms?"

"Conversation first. You do not apologize more than once unless I ask a question. You do not make the apology decorative. You do not tell me you understand if you only understand the part that hurts."

"The room can hold that."

"Say the thing you did."

Lina looked at the floor, then forced her eyes back up. "I hid a body-touching cure note because I wanted to think beside danger before anyone slowed me. I was not protecting patients. I was protecting my first access to the idea."

Tamsin breathed in. "Good. Say the thing you did after."

"I opened the blue clay jar alone. I nearly touched it. I stopped before touching. I rang after stopping, not before wanting."

"Say why that matters."

"Because stopping is not the same as never wanting. Because the rule has to hold after the want starts."

Tamsin came closer, one step. "There."

The word hit Lina like a hand to the chest.

"I am sorry," Lina said. One apology. Plain.

Tamsin nodded once. "I believe you."

That did not mean forgiven. Lina was learning not to steal meanings from words.

Tamsin set the candle on the table and sat in the chair instead of on the bed. The distance was deliberate. Lina stayed standing beside the mattress, naked only in the emotional sense for now, fully clothed and still feeling exposed.

"I need you to understand one more part," Tamsin said. "When I left the kitchen, I did not know whether I was coming back as lover, partner, or witness only."

Lina's stomach dropped. "I thought..."

"Do not tell me what you thought. Hear what I am saying. Love did not vanish. Want did not vanish. Trust changed shape in my hands, and I needed to see whether the new shape could hold weight."

Lina nodded because speaking would be a theft from the sentence.

"Then the bells rang. All three. I hated the sound. I loved the sound. I wanted to run to you and slap you and kiss you and ask whether the jar had hurt you. Vex made me sit down before I turned care into a stampede."

"Vex did?"

"Yes. She is unbearable when correct."

Lina almost smiled. Tamsin did not, but the air loosened by one breath.

"When I heard you had stopped before touch, I did not forgive you," Tamsin said. "I believed the code had reached you when nobody could admire it. That is different. That is why I am here."

"I want different to be enough."

"It is enough for tonight."

Tonight. Not forever and not nothing.

Silence held long enough for the candle to gutter.

Then Tamsin said, "I want to touch you. Not as prize and not as proof. I want to put my hands where the panic has been living and see whether you can receive without turning it into a bargain."

Lina's body answered so fast she had to grip the quilt. "Yes. Terms?"

"I lead. You answer. No hands above your head tonight, no lock words as climax words, and no making obedience pretty. If I say stop, you stop. If you say stop, I stop. If either of us starts chasing forgiveness with orgasm, we drink water and become furious."

Lina almost laughed. "Accepted."

"Undress."

Lina stood slowly. She untied the shift at her shoulder and let it fall. The room was cold enough to tighten her nipples at once. Tamsin's gaze moved over her body with hunger and caution both. Lina did not hide. She let herself be visible: breasts lifted by her breath, belly soft, thighs tense, cunt already wet enough that she felt it when she shifted.

"Body first, speech after," Tamsin said.

"Arousal is strong. Fear softer. Desire for your mouth, hands, and trust. No shortcuts."

Tamsin stepped close and touched Lina's face first. One palm on her cheek. Then throat and then shoulder. She avoided the wrist where Seraphine's mark had once been until Lina said, "You may touch there."

Tamsin shook her head. "Not tonight. Tonight I touch what you did not hide from me."

She cupped Lina's breast, thumb brushing the nipple. Lina gasped before she could make herself dignified. The touch was familiar and not familiar, tender but measured. Tamsin pinched lightly after Lina nodded, then harder when Lina whispered, "More."

"Bed," Tamsin said.

Lina lay back. Tamsin undressed only enough to free her hands, breasts, and thighs from work fabric. She kept her dress around her waist, practical and devastating. She climbed onto the bed between Lina's legs and rested one hand on Lina's inner thigh.

"May I touch your cunt?"

"Yes. Please. Outside first."

Tamsin's fingers slid through Lina's wetness. Lina moaned and caught herself trying to say something clever. Tamsin saw the answer arrive in Lina first.

"No speeches."

"Yes."

"No earning."

"Yes."

Tamsin rubbed her clit with slow circles. Lina's hips lifted. The pleasure was immediate, bright, almost too forgiving. Lina reached for Tamsin's wrist, then stopped before grabbing.

"May I hold your forearm?"

"Yes."

Lina held. Tamsin's fingers kept moving, patient and ruthless. Lina cried out when two fingers pressed at her entrance but did not enter.

"Ask plainly."

"I want your fingers inside me."

"Why?"

"Because I want you. Because I am here. Because I can speak."

Tamsin entered her with two fingers. Lina arched. No brew, no crisis, no public proof. Just Tamsin's hand inside her, Tamsin's face above her, Tamsin's anger still in the room and not destroying the pleasure. That made Lina cry before she came.

"Stay with me," Tamsin said.

"I am."

"Say one ordinary thing."

"Your braid is loose on the left."

"Then I am still visible to you."

Tamsin curled her fingers and rubbed Lina's clit with her thumb. Lina came hard, clenching around her, one hand on Tamsin's forearm, the other gripping the quilt. She did not say lock. She did not say sorry. She said Tamsin's name once, because she had permission to mean it.

Tamsin held still until the shaking eased. Then she withdrew, wiped her hand on the cloth beside the bed, and lay down next to Lina without removing the rest of her dress.

"Your turn?" Lina whispered.

Tamsin let her eyes close, patience and anger sharing the same breath. "Not with your mouth tonight."

The refusal stung, and Lina let it. "What do you want?"

"Your hand on my belly. Over clothes. I want to feel wanted without being asked to finish the repair."

Lina placed her hand where allowed. Tamsin exhaled and made her face practical again. The contact was warm, quiet, incomplete, and honest.

"May I move with your hand there?" Tamsin asked.

"Yes."

Tamsin shifted her hips once, not enough to make a scene of it, enough that Lina felt the tension in her belly and the heat trapped under the work dress. Lina's own body, still loose from orgasm, answered with a soft pulse. She did not chase it.

"Report?" Lina asked carefully.

Tamsin opened one eye. "Arousal is strong. Anger still present. I want to rub myself against your thigh and I am choosing not to because tonight I need the want to remain mine, not ours to fix."

"Thank you for telling me."

"Do not be noble about it. It is irritating."

"I will be quietly grateful and privately wet."

Tamsin laughed then, small and unwilling. "That sounded like you."

The laugh was the first warm thing that did not hurt.

After a long time, Tamsin said, "I am still angry."

"I know."

"I am staying tonight."

Lina closed her eyes for one careful breath. "I know."

"Do not make either sentence eat the other."

So Lina did not.

They slept with one hand between them, not clasped, just close enough to find in the dark.
