Chapter 180: The Village Chooses the Code

"Nobody drinks until they have eaten, nobody touches until they have asked, nobody performs grief as romance, and nobody uses the word emergency to make refusal smaller."

Tamsin read the code from the market steps at dusk with Lina on her left, Vex on her right, Isolde below with the temple bells, Garron by the evidence table, Thessia at the public ledger, and Old Pero standing beside three soup cauldrons like a domestic threat with onions. The square was full. Not festival full. Decision full.

Perric had escaped. Halven had been seized. Dev Orrel had named scrap buyers through tears and bread. Maera's first cure-net had eased twenty-three cases of sensation sickness without private administration. Lio's dock holds had stopped four outgoing parcels. Rael's route houses had sent back two warnings and one insult about Valmora needing more chairs if it planned to become moral infrastructure.

Now the village had to choose whether the emergency code became Valmora practice.

Tamsin continued. "The code is not a purity vow. It does not ban pleasure, sex work, public heat, private experiments, old marriages, new lovers, solo wanting, professional fantasy, memory comfort, grief desire, or the fact that half of you look better after soup."

The square laughed. Nervous. Interested.

"The code says heat must leave refusal full size. The code says every strong formula needs maker, witness, stopper, closer, and public face. The code says workers can close doors. Temples can protect care rooms. Markets can demand labels. Forges can hold dangerous tools. Docks can delay suspicious pleasure goods. Route houses can carry warnings. Inns can feed before they sell. Lovers can stop and remain lovers."

Pellia raised her hand. "Can widows still make obscene comments?"

Vex answered, "If self-owned and not used as medical advice."

"Excellent."

Lina looked over the crowd. Jessa stood near Kalen, not beside him yet, but closer than before. Sella and Corven shared one bench, hands touching openly. Pell stood with Renna from the Rose, both wearing closure-red ribbons. Daren held a bread basket. Soval sat under guard and temple witness, pale but present, because he had asked to hear the code he had helped endanger.

The H5 rite had been argued for two hours. Not an orgy and not a festival. A civic sensual proof: adults could choose mild heat together under the new code, in public and screened spaces, without turning crisis into shame or safety into coldness.

Thessia read the vote terms. "Adults only. Participation optional. Watching optional from marked areas. No false brew. Hearthwater only. Rose screens available. Temple cooling open. Solo station available. Couple station available. Worker station closed for service but open for protocol demonstration. Public reports voluntary. No names in ledger unless chosen."

Hands rose. Not all. Enough.

The code passed.

Lina breathed for what felt like the first time since the copper page went missing.

Thessia did not let the breath become sentiment. "Those opposed may record objection without penalty. Those abstaining may sign later after reading. No one is required to participate in the rite to receive protection under the code."

That mattered. Three hands that had not risen lowered from defensive fists into ordinary uncertainty. A cooper's widow asked whether her son, who was nineteen and terrified of public heat, still counted as protected if he went home now. Vex answered before the crowd could look at the young man too hard.

"Protection is not purchased with performance. He may go home."

The young man left with his mother, and nobody called after him. The code worked first by letting someone leave it visibly.

Then Old Pero served soup.

That was the first act of Valmora's new erotic law: bowls, bread, salt, spoons.

Only after eating did Hearthwater move through the square. Lina brewed it in public with Tamsin beside her. No hidden vial. Water through clean ash. Salt. Emberleaf. Honey after bread. Tamsin poured. Lina spoke the warning. Isolde rang one bell for water, then none for danger.

The heat that followed was mild and everywhere.

Not a wave. A settling.

It changed the square by inches. Shoulders loosened. People admitted thirst. A woman who had not spoken all day asked her wife whether she could hold her hand. A carter said he was aroused and scared and wanted to sit by the forge table where nobody would flirt with him. Garron pointed to a bench and gave him a cup of water. The carter sat, relieved almost to tears.

At the solo station, Pellia drank, waited, and slid one hand under the blanket over her lap. She looked straight at Lina. "Private enough?"

Lina checked the screen angle. "Private enough."

"I report later if I feel like bragging."

At the couple station, Sella kissed Corven with both hands on his face, then stopped him with two fingers on his chest. He stopped. The watching crowd, trained by the trial, noticed the stop and applauded that instead of the kiss. Sella laughed against his mouth and said loudly, "That applause is for you not being an idiot."

Corven bowed. "I accept civic recognition."

Behind a Rose screen, Vex demonstrated worker closure with Mira and Renna. A client volunteer asked for a fantasy admission. Mira said no. The volunteer stepped back, repeated the refusal, and thanked her. Then Renna, by prior agreement, asked Mira for a kiss as herself, not worker. Mira said yes. They kissed briefly, warmly, and stopped smiling. The square saw only shadows and heard Vex say, "Different roles. Different consent. Same bodies. Learn the difference or lose the room."

At the temple station, Pell accepted a cup, felt arousal rise when the bell rang, and named it without shame. "Bell heat. Mine to wait with."

Isolde gave him water. "Good."

Maera's reed mark sat beside the cure-net station, though Maera herself had refused the crowd and sent three sentences instead:

Returned feeling needs a task.

Do not turn cure into courtship.

Name the marsh seller.

The last line made people look toward the evidence table. Good. Even celebration needed teeth.

The rite deepened as dusk turned gold. Adults touched through cloth, kissed behind screens, held hands in public for the first time, sat alone with warmth in their laps and did not apologize. Some became aroused enough to leave for home under witness terms. Some stayed and cooled. Some laughed. Some cried. No one was allowed to turn another person's reaction into entertainment.

Lina's own body answered the square. Of course it did. Breasts tight, cunt wet, skin warm under her dress. Not from false pressure. From chosen heat, visible rules, Tamsin's shoulder near hers, and the impossible sight of Valmora making desire communal without making it public property.

"Report," Tamsin murmured.

"Arousal is strong. Pride stronger. Fear is present. Desire to kiss you in front of everyone."

Tamsin's eyes warmed. "Ask."

"May I kiss you in front of everyone?"

"Yes. Mouth. No performance."

Lina kissed her. The square saw. The kiss was not long, not staged. Tamsin's mouth opened under hers for one breath, enough to make Lina's knees remember the bedroom and the kitchen and every first rule between them. Then Tamsin pulled back.

People did not cheer.

They let it be a kiss.

That restraint made Lina want to cry.

Thessia opened the public ledger. "Final code naming."

Names were proposed and rejected. The Beren Rules sounded too owned. The Hearth Laws sounded too sacred. The Rose Code sounded too narrow. Bell and Bread made Old Pero insufferably proud for thirty seconds before Tamsin killed it with a look.

Jessa raised her hand. "Full Size."

The square went quiet.

She stood with her shawl around her shoulders. "Refusal remains full size. Wanting remains full size. Care remains full size. That is what saved me from becoming a joke in my own alley."

Kalen's eyes filled. He did not touch her.

Thessia wrote: The Full Size Code.

No one argued.

The final act was not a climax, though some adults left to find one privately and safely. The final act was signing. Lina, Tamsin, Vex, Isolde, Thessia, Garron, Lio for docks, Rael by route mark, Maera by reed mark, Sama by Rose witness, Old Pero by soup ladle stamped in ash. Then citizens by choice.

Soval signed last under guard, hand shaking. "I helped carry the harm. I want the code to make men like me easier to stop."

Tamsin nodded as if filing the answer for later. "Useful signature."

When night settled, the hearth inside the Moonlit Chalice flared high enough to be seen through the open door. The temple bell answered once. At the docks, another bell rang. From the south road came a route horn, faint but real.

Valmora had not solved desire.

It had chosen to answer for it.

That was enough for one night.

Morning would ask for more, and the code would have to answer in ordinary daylight.

So would Lina, publicly and plainly too, tomorrow.
