"If you tell me the hearth feels sentimental tonight, I will remind it that soot is not a personality."

Tamsin said it after the last guest went upstairs and the common room settled into the deep quiet that only busy places earn. Ten years had passed since the first batch. One Night Free had become a yearly custom, smaller some years, louder in others, always fed. The public brew had become less miracle than fixture, which Lina considered the highest possible compliment and occasionally resented when no one admired her enough.

Lina knelt at the hearth with a poker in one hand and a cup of water in the other.

The old plate remained covered. Garron's guard had been replaced twice, both times by Garron himself after complaining that everyone else loved crooked metal. The five grooves still warmed when the room held consent properly. The open circle still disliked empty agreement. The hearth still refused to explain itself in a way Orin could publish, which Lina counted as wisdom.

Tamsin locked the ledger drawer. "Palace crate signed?"

"Signed."

"Refusal clause?"

"Copied in your most hostile handwriting."

"Then future fools can suffer honestly."

"Payment?"

"Too generous."

"Annoying."

"I charged a dignity inconvenience fee."

"Better."

Lina looked over her shoulder. Tamsin was forty now, which meant nothing had become softer except the places she allowed softness to live. Her hair held a few silver threads. Her mouth remained dangerous. Her hands had lines from ledgers, trays, lovers, locks, and every argument she had refused to lose for Lina's own good.

"You are staring," Tamsin said.

"I own half the inn. I am inspecting assets."

"You own half the inn. You do not own my backside."

"I was inspecting your authority."

"My authority is higher up."

Lina rose, laughing quietly. "Is it available for inspection?"

Tamsin's eyes darkened with the familiar change that still made Lina's body answer as if they were younger and more foolish. "Terms."

That word had lived between them for a decade and never lost heat.

Lina set down the poker. "No brew tonight. Door locked. Hearth only. No ledger, no palace, no dangerous notes, no future traveler knocking until morning. I want you on the hearth rug. I want your mouth. I want to make you come first because I have been thinking about it since you threatened the lantern novice with inventory reform."

Tamsin leaned back against the bar. "That was a serious administrative moment."

"It was erotic governance."

"You are still impossible."

"Equal partner. Impossible by contract."

Tamsin crossed the room and stopped in front of her. "My terms. No kneeling like worship. If you go down, you do it because you want my cunt, not because the hearth is glowing at us like an old gossip. If either of us says stop, we stop. If I cry, you do not fix it with your mouth unless I ask."

Lina had to swallow around the sudden tightness in her throat. "Agreed."

The hearth warmed.

"Show-off," Tamsin told it.

They laughed, and the laughter entered the room before desire did, which felt right for an ending.

Tamsin untied Lina's apron first, folded it with absurd care, and set it on a chair. Lina unbuttoned Tamsin's bodice with slower fingers than she would have used ten years ago. Not because she wanted less. Because she knew the worth of taking time. Tamsin's breasts filled her hands, warmer and heavier than memory ever got right. Lina bent and kissed one nipple, then the other, through breath, through a small sound Tamsin tried to swallow and failed.

"Body first," Lina whispered.

"Arousal high. Impatience higher. Still choosing."

Lina kissed lower. "Good."

"Do not sound so pleased with my compliance."

"I am pleased with your wanting."

That shut Tamsin up for exactly the length of one breath.

They moved to the hearth rug. It was old, patched twice, and clean because Old Pero's successor had inherited his horror of sticky floors. Tamsin lay back, skirts lifted by her own hands. Lina knelt beside her, not in worship, in appetite. She kissed Tamsin's thigh, then looked up.

"May I?"

Tamsin's hand slid into Lina's hair. "Yes."

Lina put her mouth on Tamsin.

The first taste of her was familiar enough to hurt and new enough to make Lina moan. Tamsin was wet, open, and not patient. Lina licked her slowly at first, then harder when Tamsin's hand tightened in her hair. The hearth warmed at Lina's side. The room held them: bar, tables, stairs, ledger drawer, brew shelf, old plate, every year they had survived because no one had been allowed to call love the same thing as trust without doing the work.

"Fingers," Tamsin said.

Lina slid two fingers inside her. Tamsin's hips lifted. Lina pressed her other hand over Tamsin's lower belly and licked her clit with steady pressure.

"That," Tamsin said, voice rough. "There. Do not make me ask like a customer."

Lina laughed against her, then obeyed. Tamsin came with a low sound that filled the common room more completely than any festival music ever had. Her cunt clenched around Lina's fingers. Her hand pulled Lina's hair hard enough to sting. Lina held her through it, mouth gentle as the pulse faded.

"Here is the honest version," Lina said softly.

Tamsin breathed for several seconds. "Orgasm. Your mouth. My ask. Ten years and I still want you. Annoying."

Lina rested her cheek on Tamsin's thigh. "Recorded in my finest inner ledger."

Tamsin tugged her upward. "Your turn before you become smug."

Lina straddled her on the rug, skirts tangled, hair falling loose. Tamsin's hand went between Lina's thighs without delay, because some permissions had become their own language over years and still got spoken aloud when needed.

"May I touch you?"

"Yes. I want your fingers. I want your thumb on my clit. I want to come looking at the hearth and knowing it is ours to tend, not ours to own."

Tamsin's eyes softened. "There you are."

Her fingers slid inside Lina. Lina bowed over her, forehead nearly touching Tamsin's. Pleasure rose fast, deepened by the old room, the safe brew on shelves, the locked hardware, the seventh door still closed, the temple lanterns, the archive refusal, the people upstairs choosing their own heat. Tamsin's thumb circled her clit. Lina rocked into her hand.

"Body first, speech after," Tamsin said.

"Fingers inside. Thumb on clit. Hearth warm. Mine. Yours. Ours. No command."

"Come when you choose."

Lina chose.

The orgasm moved through her with less violence than the first batch years ago and more depth. She did not feel like a door opening to the world. She felt like a woman in her own inn, on her own rug, held by the partner who had made her better by refusing to be useful decoration. She cried out once, then laughed because crying would have become too easy.

Tamsin held her until her breathing settled.

They lay together on the rug afterward, half-dressed, warm, older, sticky, and unashamed. The hearth burned low beside them.

"Do you ever miss the whole fire?" Tamsin asked.

Lina answered honestly. "Sometimes."

Tamsin nodded against her shoulder. "Good. I would worry if you lied."

"Do you ever miss when I was easier to throw out of the kitchen?"

"You were never easy. You were just less well documented."

Lina laughed into her hair.

In a palace far from Valmora, a sealed royal copy of the Full Size Code warmed under a white-gloved hand for the second time that night. The woman who touched it did not open the seal. She had other papers now. Other candidates. Other ways to ask a body whether command could be taught to sound like desire.

The warmth faded there.

At the Moonlit Chalice, the hearth did not flare in answer. It did not send warning. It did not make Lina a chosen savior ten years too late.

It simply kept burning.

Lina rose after a while, fed the fire, and placed bread on the cooling shelf for morning.

Tamsin watched from the rug. "Still trying to feed the whole world?"

"No," Lina said. "Just whoever comes through the door hungry."

Tamsin smiled with affection sharpened at the edges. "That is worse. It sounds sustainable."

Lina came back to her and lay down again, fitting herself against the body that had become home without becoming a cage.

Outside, Valmora slept, woke, wanted, refused, erred, repaired, and wanted again. The roads remained open. The Rose kept one door closed. The library kept its no. The temple kept cloth beside lanterns. The forge kept the coil locked. Somewhere beyond Sorana Vale, Seraphine kept searching.

The fire in the Moonlit Chalice did not solve the world.

It lit one room well enough for people to enter by choice.

That was the first batch.

That was enough.

In the morning, there would be bread, cups, terms, and someone hungry at the door.

Lina would answer with fire kept stubbornly, warmly human.
