"If anyone says final recipe before eating, I will pour the cup into their shoes and call it agricultural research."
Tamsin said it over the breakfast board while Lina lined up twenty small clay cups along the Moonlit Chalice bar. The inn had been cleaned so thoroughly it looked suspicious. The hearth stones shone. The old plate stayed covered beneath Garron's fitted guard. Bread sat in three baskets. Cooling cloths hung from pegs. The Rose screen stood in the corner, not hiding anyone yet, simply reminding the room that pleasure deserved doors.
Safe Formula Day had started with onions, which made it harder for anyone to become sacred about it.
Jessa stood beside Kalen with one hand on her own cup and the other tucked into her shawl. Widow Marra sat near the window with her boots planted and her hair braided in a thick silver rope. Lio leaned by the post, smiling as if he had seen storms less carefully organized. Vex, Isolde, Thessia, Garron, Orin, Old Pero, and three adult village couples filled the room by witness list, not gossip order.
Lina held the final formula slate.
"Public Special Brew," she said, and her voice only shook once. "Warm inn water. Clean ash filtered through public cloth. Common salt. Leaf-strength emberleaf. Honey after food. One spoon old well water warmed by the consenting hearth. No memory distillate, no mire suspension, no vapor coil, no blue clay, no hinge warmth, no returned bead, and no Threshold cradle."
"And no miracles," Tamsin added.
Lina let her nod answer before her caution could object. "No miracles sold by cup."
The hearth warmed under the covered plate. Not flaring. Listening.
Thessia read the service terms. Every adult present had eaten. Every cup was half strength. Every participant could stop, leave, use the screen, ask for cooling, or refuse to report personal details. Couples could touch only within terms named before drinking. Solo testers could choose private hand contact with themselves behind the screen and report only heat level if they preferred. No one would be teased for needing water. No one would be praised for enduring more than comfort allowed.
Old Pero lifted a ladle. "And nobody uses the phrase public health of desire while standing near my soup. It makes the carrots anxious."
"The carrots are safer than most officials," Vex said.
That broke the room open enough for laughter.
Lina poured.
The final brew looked almost plain: amber at the rim, gold in the center, steam carrying bread, salt, honey, and something like a warm hand held near the skin without touching. She gave the first cup to Jessa because Jessa had named the Full Size Code. Jessa took it and looked at Kalen.
"I want you beside me," she said. "I do not want your hand under my shawl unless I ask. If I start crying, you may ask whether I want touch, but do not decide for me because your face becomes heroic and I dislike that during breakfast."
Kalen swallowed. "I can do that. I want to hold you. I will not until you ask. If I become aroused, I will not make it your duty."
The hearth warmed.
Jessa drank.
Color rose along her throat. Her fingers tightened around the cup, then loosened. "Heat is mild. Chest warm. Between my legs, yes, but not pulling. I can think." She looked almost offended by that. "I expected the cup to be more bossy."
"We have spent months making it less bossy," Lina said.
Jessa laughed. Then she looked at Kalen with a steadiness that made the room look away only as much as manners required. "Now you may touch my hand."
He did.
The first report went into the ledger: desire present, refusal intact, thought clear, touch requested after cup.
Tamsin took the next cup from Lina before Lina could decide whether makers should be noble and wait. "I am drinking because I helped make the code, because I am about to have my name dragged into ownership, and because if the final brew makes me want to climb over this bar, we should know before customers pay coin for it."
"You are a gift to marketing," Lina said.
"I am a warning label with legs."
Tamsin ate one more bite of bread, then drank. She did not close her eyes. She watched Lina over the rim as heat took her. The sight went straight through Lina: Tamsin's throat moving, her cheeks warming, her mouth softening by one dangerous degree.
"Report," Vex said.
Tamsin set the cup down. "Warm mouth. Chest loose. Cunt wet. Irritation intact. I want Lina's hands later, not now, and not because the cup hurried me. I can serve customers without turning into a public problem unless Lina keeps looking proud enough to deserve punishment."
"That last part is not formula data," Thessia said.
"It is partnership data," Tamsin replied.
The hearth warmed again, and Lina's body answered so sharply she had to grip the bar.
"Maker report," she said. "Arousal is moderate from Tamsin's report, and I want to make a private celebration out of a public test. I am leaving that for later, when later is allowed."
Tamsin let a small, dangerous smile show. "Later recorded."
Widow Marra took the second cup. "I am drinking alone because my last good lover is dead, and if anyone pities me loudly, I will become unpleasant in ways your grandchildren will quote."
"You may use the screen," Isolde said.
"I may use this chair. I have earned public knees."
Marra drank. Her eyes closed. Her hand slid over her own thigh, not under her skirt, only enough to show that the warmth had found her. "Good. It wakes without dragging memory behind it. My body knows what it is for, and my grief is not invited unless I invite it."
"Heat level?" Thessia asked.
"Moderate. Pleasant. I could finish myself if I chose. I choose later, privately, after pie."
Old Pero nodded. "Pie improves many endings."
Then the couple behind the Rose screen tested touch terms.
They were Harlan and Sura, both adult, both mill workers with flour still caught at their cuffs. They had asked for a guided couple report because Sura had never trusted pleasure that arrived when someone else was watching, and Harlan had wanted to learn how not to hurry her. They stood behind the screen visible from shoulders up and calves down. Vex read their terms aloud.
"Sura may unlace her own bodice. Harlan may touch her waist and breasts only after she asks. No fingers between legs until a second ask. Report heat every five breaths. Stop means hands off and water."
Sura drank first. Harlan drank after. Heat made Sura's cheeks bloom and Harlan grip his own thighs rather than reaching. Lina saw that and liked him more for it.
"First ask," Sura said, voice shaking. "Waist. Breasts over shift."
Harlan put his hands where named. Sura tipped her head back, mouth open on a breath that made Lina's own body answer. The brew did not spread like command. It spread like permission meeting a body already braver than before.
"Heat high," Sura said. "Want more. Thinking clear."
"Second ask required," Vex said.
Sura laughed, breathless and irritated. "Yes, I know. Harlan, put your fingers under my skirt. Slow. If I say stop, you stop. If I grab your wrist, stop unless I say hold."
His hand disappeared below the screen edge. Sura's knees bent. The room heard her inhale, heard the wet sound only briefly when his fingers found her, heard Harlan whisper, "Is this right?" in a voice so full of care it made Marra mutter something fond and filthy into her cup.
"Yes," Sura said. "Circle my clit. Do not push inside yet."
The hearth warmed brighter.
Lina stood very still. This was what the dangerous formula had tried to steal and scale: the moment a person spoke desire and remained herself. Sura came with her hand gripping the screen edge, Harlan's other hand at her waist, her voice rough but clear.
"Orgasm. My ask. His hand. Stop now."
Harlan stopped.
The room did not applaud. That would have made the pleasure a performance. Instead Isolde handed water around the screen and Vex entered the report.
Lina's eyes stung.
Tamsin leaned close. "Do not cry into the final recipe. Salt is already measured."
Lina laughed and wiped her face with the heel of her hand. "Report from maker. Arousal moderate from witnessed safe pleasure. Pride is present. No desire to strengthen the brew."
Tamsin's face warmed. "That last part matters."
More cups followed. Some heat stayed playful. Some couples left to finish upstairs under room terms. Lio reported that the brew made him want conversation before touch, which he called "financially dangerous." Marra asked for pie and a private room key for later. Jessa signed the final public effect line in the ledger.
When the last cup was recorded, Thessia drew a box around the recipe.
"Public Special Brew finalized under the Full Size Code," she said. "Civic copies authorized after Tamsin's ownership update."
Lina blinked once before she trusted her voice. "After what?"
Tamsin looked at the bar as if it had personally betrayed her. "That was supposed to be tomorrow's ambush."
The hearth flared.
Old Pero grinned. "Even the floor likes paperwork."
Safe Formula Day ended with bread, wet eyes, a few discreet room keys, and a recipe plain enough to survive being desired.
