"Do not hand me a ceremonial object unless it has a practical hook, a replacement clause, and enough weight to knock sense into a client."
Vex stood in the Velvet Rose receiving room with one hand extended and her expression professionally unimpressed. Lina had brought the first official crate of public Special Brew under the Full Size Code, wrapped in red cloth, sealed by inn, temple, market, and Rose. Tamsin stood beside the crate with the delivery ledger. Sama watched from the far couch, amused in the way of women who made other people wonder what they had missed.
The pendant sat in Lina's palm.
It was not ornate. Garron had made it from dark copper and old hearth ash fused under glass. The front held a tiny open circle crossed by a horizontal line. The back carried three words in small practical script: ask, feed, stop. A hook at the top could fasten to a collar, door cord, ledger chain, or wrist ribbon.
"It has a hook," Lina said.
"I see the hook. I am asking whether the hook survives drunk hands, greedy hands, frightened hands, and theatrical hands."
Tamsin lifted the repair slip. "Replaceable by forge at market rate unless damaged during code enforcement, in which case the inn pays half and the client who made it necessary pays the rest."
Vex looked pleased despite herself. "Continue."
Lina placed the pendant on the low table instead of handing it over. "It marks an official Rose room supplied under the public formula. It means the room has food before heat, visible exits, cooling cloth, worker refusal, client refusal, report terms, and stop authority. It does not mean the worker is available. It does not mean the client is safe because they paid. It does not mean Lina Beren approves whatever nonsense happens beneath it."
Sama's smile deepened. "A pity. I had hoped for approved nonsense."
"You generate your own," Tamsin said.
"With care."
Vex picked up the pendant. Her thumb moved over the open circle. The gesture was small, but Lina saw what it cost. Vex had spent years making safety out of voice, timing, exits, and reputation. Now a piece of metal would carry some of that labor after the first generation forgot who had bled sense into the rules.
"Before I wear it," Vex said, "Mira tests refusal against it."
Mira lifted both brows. "Do I?"
"Only if you choose. I want the first worker action under this pendant to be no, not service."
Mira's expression changed. The locked-drawer voice stayed, but something behind it warmed. "I choose. Lina, offer me a cup badly."
Lina blinked, too late to hide that the sentence had landed. "Badly?"
"Like a supplier who thinks a seal makes her charming."
Tamsin muttered, "Naturalistic exercise."
Lina picked up the bottle and offered it with deliberate foolishness. "This is official now, so you should try it for the good of the house."
"No," Mira said.
The pendant, still on the table, warmed under Vex's fingers.
No one touched the bottle.
Mira nodded once. "Good. It does not sulk when refused."
Sama's smile thinned with approval. "Many clients could learn from metal."
"I will wear it for the first tasting," Vex said.
Lina blinked the room back into focus. "You are testing?"
"I am receiving first supply. I should know what my workers will serve under my roof."
Tamsin opened the crate and took out one sealed bottle. "Terms?"
Vex looked toward Sama. "No client, no sale, and no performance debt. Lina and Tamsin present as suppliers and witnesses. Sama present as house authority. Mira present as worker witness if she chooses."
From the side doorway, Mira entered. She was a full-grown Rose worker with copper-brown skin, soft arms, sharp eyes, and a voice that could make politeness sound like a locked drawer. "I choose witness. I do not choose touch. If anyone forgets the difference because Vex is pretty with new metal at her throat, I will close their fingers in the door and call it training."
"Excellent," Vex said. "We are all affectionate today."
She fastened the pendant at her throat.
The effect startled Lina. The pendant sat against Vex's skin just above the neckline of her dark dress, not decorative exactly, but intimate. Authority made visible. A small weight where a client might look before looking lower. Ask. Feed. Stop.
Vex drank half a cup.
She closed her eyes.
No one spoke until she opened them again.
"Heat clear," Vex said. "Mouth warm. Breasts responsive. Cunt wet. Thought intact. No performance pull. That is the important thing. I can feel desire without feeling that desire has become a room obligation."
Mira leaned against the doorway. "Would you serve it before a paid scene?"
"Only after intake and food. Never to rescue a dull booking. Never to make a hesitant worker sparkle. Never to make a client generous. Never to turn fatigue into theater."
Sama tilted her head. "And for yourself?"
Vex smiled then, slow and dangerous in a wholly human way. "For myself, perhaps now."
The room grew warmer.
Vex looked at Lina. "I want to test private arousal under the pendant without taking service. I will touch myself over my clothes first. If I choose skin, I will say so. No one touches me. No one praises me for restraint. If my report becomes performance, Sama stops me."
Sama's eyes sharpened. "Accepted."
Tamsin said, "Screen?"
"No. Chair."
Vex sat in the central chair where clients usually learned whether they were permitted to become clients. She spread her knees enough for comfort, not display, and placed one hand over her lower belly. Her other hand touched the pendant.
"I am Vex," she said. "Adult. Fed. Free to leave my own room, which is amusing but still necessary. Heat is moderate. I choose to test desire as mine."
Her hand slid down over the front of her dress and pressed between her thighs.
Lina felt her own body answer at once. Vex was controlled, yes, but not cold. Her fingers moved with precise pressure over fabric, circling where her clit would be. Her breathing deepened. The pendant rose and fell at her throat. Mira watched with worker seriousness. Sama watched like a woman measuring a lock by listening to the key.
"Report," Sama said.
"Arousal higher. Fabric touch. No service pull. No wish to be watched by clients. Comfortable being witnessed by workers and suppliers."
She shifted her hips, pressing harder. The dark dress gathered under her hand. Her lips parted. Lina saw the moment Vex decided not to make elegance do the work of honesty.
"I choose skin," Vex said.
She lifted her skirt to mid-thigh and slipped her hand beneath. The room saw wrist movement, tension in her legs, the flush at her throat. Not more than she had chosen. Enough to know she was truly touching herself.
Tamsin leaned close to Lina and murmured, "Do not start looking like a converted accountant."
Lina whispered, "I am making supplier observations."
"Your observations are breathing through their mouth."
Vex laughed without stopping her hand. "Both of you may record that the brew remains socially disruptive at safe strength."
Then her laugh broke. Her thighs tightened. "Close. No one speak."
No one did.
Vex came quietly, one hand under her skirt, the other gripping the pendant. Her shoulders shook once. Her mouth opened, but she kept the sound low, private by choice rather than shame. When she lowered her skirt, her face was flushed and clear.
"Orgasm," she said. "My hand. My room. Public formula did not create a service obligation."
Mira nodded. "I would serve under that pendant."
The words mattered more than ceremony.
Mira took the pendant between two fingers and lifted it just enough to feel the weight against Vex's throat. "And if a client points at this and says it means the room owes him heat, I want the record to say I may laugh before refusing."
"Laughing is not required," Vex said.
"No. But it is sometimes efficient."
Sama stood and took a second pendant from her sleeve.
Lina stared. "You made another?"
"I commissioned another," Sama said. "I trust useful symbols more when there are two and neither person thinks they invented symbolism alone."
Vex accepted it with a look that held an entire private history Lina did not know. "Where will this one hang?"
"The seventh corridor," Sama said.
Tamsin's eyes narrowed. "The room Lina still has not seen."
"Correct."
Sama looked at Lina then, advice and threat folded together. "Some doors stay closed so future stories have hinges."
The official Rose supply ledger was signed. The pendant lineage began with Vex's name, Mira's worker witness, Sama's house mark, and Lina and Tamsin as equal suppliers.
When they left, Lina glanced back once.
Vex stood in the receiving room with the pendant at her throat and the sealed crate behind her, not a customer, not a symbol, not a prize.
A professional woman with a tool that would outlive the first hands to use it.
